IPNEd members now in 90 parliaments

At the 148th IPU assembly, IPNEd engaged with Members of Parliament from the 180 national parliaments of the IPU on our mission to mobilise political leadership for education. Through a stand at the assembly, attending multiple events, our Executive Director addressing the assembly and our existing relationships with MPs, we promoted our key priority and campaign areas with Members of Parliament.

This gave us the opportunity to engage with many existing members of our network as well as recruit more than 80 new MPs to the network.

We are delighted to welcome these 84 new Members of Parliament to the Network from 54 different countries, from the Netherlands to Cote d’Ivoire to Tonga.

Honourable Nancy Acora, MP from Uganda explained “I am very grateful and delighted to join and collaborate with this great network, by working together we can improve the situation for children around the world”.

South Sudanese MPs, Honourable Daniel Malou, Honourable Sandra Malwal and Honourable Janet Taban were delighted to join the network and understand the steps they can take to ensure every child is in school and learning. Hon. Malou described IPNEd, as a “terrific initiative that is very much needed”, Hon. Taban explained that she will “devote time in parliament and outside of parliament to advocate for quality education and crucially to increase the education budget” and the Chair of the South Sudan Parliament’s Education Committee Hon. Malwal said the Network will provide her with essential information and resources to aid her and her members' work.

Of the 84 new members of IPNEd, 31 are from national parliaments where we did not previously have representation. “We’re thrilled to now have representation from 90 parliaments, which highlights the growing recognition amog parliamentarians of the need to accelerate progress towards achieving quality education for all”, said IPNEd, Executive Director, Joseph Nhan-O’Reilly.

In our discussions with the Members of Parliament, we focused on priority interventions, including that children have access to early childhood development services, are in-school with the tools to learn, like skilled teachers, quality books, that their progress is tracked and that they receive school meals.

Finally, we highlighted that none of this is possible without closing the education financing gap. The photos below demonstrate our engagements with MPs on these topics and demonstrate their commitment to ensure every child learns.
